Breast Augmentation

Breast enlargement with implants (augmentation) is an operation that appears to be easier than it is. You should only trust the experts in their field. Correctly applied, breast augmentation can significantly improve the quality of life.

If the breast is perceived as too small, has lost volume (pregnancy/weight loss) or is asymmetrical, the breast can be enlarged by inserting an implant. For this purpose I only use high-quality, long-proven implants. These are round or teardrop-shaped (anatomical). Depending on the shape of the breast and the condition of the skin, an additional skin lifting (mastopexy) can be advantageous. Which form of the operation is the most suitable is discussed in a joint.

Surgery

The breast augmentation is performed under a short general anesthesia. The skin incision is usually made in the inframammary fold. The implant is then placed either directly behind the mammary gland (breast tissue) or behind the breast (pectoral) muscle. If necessary, small tubes (drains) are placed to drain the wound water. Finally, the breasts are bandaged to minimize swelling.

After Surgery

The breast are tense and painful for several days. A bra supports the healing. The stitches dissolve themselves. The scars are initially firm and slightly reddened. Light activities can be resumed after a few days. The swelling can last 4 to 8 weeks. During this time the breasts are often sensitive to touch. After about 3 months the breasts have reached their final shape and size. After about 6 months the scars will fade.

Risks

Acute complications are extremely rare. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks, such as bleeding, infection or wound healing disorders. Sometimes there is hypersensitivity or numbness of the nipples. This usually normalises over time, but may be permanent in a few patients. The ability to breastfeed is usually not affected by a breast implant. Over the years, capsular fibrosis and contracture can develop, which can lead to implant replacement. Unfortunately, there is currently no implant that lasts a lifetime. Therefore, one must be prepared to replace the implants over the years. We will discuss the exact risks in detail during the consultation.
